Jason Moloney surprisingly snubs the opportunity to fight for the WBC vacant title vs Living legend Nonito Donaire for the easier WBO vacant title route which was vacant along side with the rest of the recognized bantamweight world titles by Naoya Inoue.
“The WBC has received confirmation from Top Rank that Moloney will not be fighting for The WBC bantamweight title,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed to the teams for both boxers via official letter. “With this letter the process of Moloney vs Donaire is hereby cancelled.”
Arguably Donaire & Moloney are the top 2 bantamweight fighters since Inoue has moved up to seek a mega showdown with Stephen Fulton, Petitioned the wbc in their 60th annual convention to basically be in position to fight for the vacant title in case Inoue vacates after the Undisputed Paul Butler fight which eventually happened. Top Rank which Promotes Jason Moloney had other plans to go a different route and not deal with Donaire’s representatives at Probellum.
Both Probellum and Top Rank also fumble to make the fight between Regis Prograis vs Jose Ramirez. So it’s inevitable Regis Prograis vs Teofimo Lopez won’t come thru fruition neither.
Richard Schaefer co founder of Probellum who represents Nonito Donaire said to boxing scenes “Our stance was always the same, Nonito Donaire was going to challenge for the WBC bantamweight title. We went to the WBC convention to declare our position which has not changed. “I wish I could say that I was surprised but I am not.”
Moloney seems thrilled of the idea stepping in the ring with Nonito Donaire late last year. It’s an assumption that this decision was not made by Moloney himself but by those who represent him which don’t want to do business with the other side and as a fighter that’s exclusively signed to Top Rank. Jason needs to go with the planners thats in charge of flipping the bill. One thing for sure Moloney will get a crack at a vacant world title thru the WBO but it would have been more of an accomplishment fighting and possibly beating a 4 division world champion and a legend in Nonito Donaire.
As for Donaire, There is really nothing left to prove yet to accomplish a personal goal which he may have set. Donaire already punched his ticket into the Hall of Fame. Donaire legacy has hit a stage of immortality which means even if he takes an L in his next outing, it won’t dent his legacy. Yet looking at the landscape at bantamweight division. Donaire is still the favorite over anyone who steps in the ring with the legend and maybe just maybe that’s another reason why Moloney team took the easier route to give Jason a favorable chance in winning his 1st major world title.
