The Canelo Alvarez that looked invisible during the road to Super Middleweight Undisputed, is back. Canelo easily defeated Junior Middleweight Undisputed Champion Jermell Charlo who jumped up 2 weight classes, daring to be great, last night in front of an amazing pro Canelo Mexican crowd in the T-Mobile Arena. The surprise was not Canelo coming up with the victory, yet the lack of urgency Charlo displayed.
Many questioned Charlo’s uncharacteristic reserved demeanor in the lead up to the fight, during press conferences and interviews etc. Charlo walked into the ring and displayed that same demeanor. The Lion just didn’t show up. Is not so much what Canelo did , but what Charlo didn’t do. Canelo humanized Charlo before and during the fight.
Canelo Knocked Down Charlo in the 7th round with a powering right hand, right to the dome. Charlo recovered well yet only to coast, it just seemed Charlo wanted to survive, rather than leaving it all out in the ring.
“Truthfully, I could feel the difference in the weight. I jumped up 14 pounds. I am undisputed in my weight division. I was daring do be great but you fall short sometimes. You just have to keep on pushing. My road don’t stop right here.”
When asked Charlo about the challenge in going up in weight to fight not only the best 168 Champion but arguably the best fighter in the world.
“Absolutely I’ll move back to 154. This morning, I weighed like 172 or 173 pounds. I’ll grandfather myself into this. I’m proud of myself. He didn’t knock me out. He knocked all them other guys out. He hit me with some hard shots. I thought I got mine off. I’m the little Charlo and I represent that.
Canelo’s Stamina was in question coming into the fight which in the previous 3 fights it was noticeably affecting his performances. Lingering injuries and surgery which prevented Canelo to train to the maximum of his capabilities. Even tho Canelo won a unanimous decision which a small percentage of critics will nitpick not stopping the smaller man. Only way he’ll know if his stamina is up to par, is to go a full 12.
“I wasn’t disappointed not to get the knockout. I feel great. That’s why we fight 12 rounds, right? If I don’t get the knockout, I get 12 rounds to show I’m the best. That I’m the better fighter. That’s why it’s 12 rounds, to show who’s better. Nobody can beat this Canelo.
What’s next for both fighters? Well, Charlo plans to move back down to 154 and defend his titles either against Terence Crawford or Winner of Tim Tszyu vs Brian Mendoza. As For Canelo Alvarez, he’s looking to returning back in the ring 5 de Mayo weekend May 4th and probably will face the winner of David Benavidez vs Demetrius Andrade.
